Barking is the easiest way a dog can communicate itself with you or others, and should not be totally eliminated. However, sometimes your dog barks endlessly and constantly, and without a seemingly good reason, in which case you really have a problem. The most common consequence of this is that your neighbors may ask you to do something about it, and not necessarily in a polite way. While some people immediately rush to get an anti bark collar, this should not be your first reaction. More often than not, the dog is trying to communicate to you that it's very uncomfortable because of something and is just trying hard to get you to do something about it. The first thing you should do is answer the question "Why does your dog bark?" Maybe it's just hungry or thirsly.

Hungry dogs can make a lot of noise so make it a point to feed your dog on time. Second, make sure that your dog's favorite toy is within its reach. Most dogs bark incessantly to let their owners know that they cannot reach for their toys so see to it that your dog gets its toys.

Dogs have emotional needs as well, so if the dog is not sick, not hungry, not thirsty, and its toys are around, it might be that it's stressed or just bored. If you're out all day long and your dog is left alone at home for hours, then barking becomes the only escape for its stress or boredom.

Barking out of boredom or stress can last as long as the feeling itself, which may be hours. If you find that your dog barks when you are out at work or at school, then you should definitely not add more stress to the dog by making it wear an anti bark collar. Instead, try to spend some time with your dog, like taking him for a walk. This will make your dog feel your company and not enclosed in a small space. In addition, you can benefit from a bit of exercise and fresh air and avoid becoming a couch potato in front of the TV.

Some types of dogs bark obsessively in response to certain stimulants. If you took all the steps above and still wonder "why does my dog bark?" then it might be excited about something else, like the sound your phone makes when it rings. To stop your dog from making so much noise, answer the phone immediately or let your answering machine get the call after the first ring. This way, your dog won't get all worked up and bark for several minutes.
